James Robert Durant
After Graduating from Sheridan College as top scholar in the Photography program (2003) James boarded the Dawn Princess as a Cruise Line Photographer. Vancouver to San Francisco, Mexican Riviera, Panama Canal, and British and U.S. Virgin Islands; James returned home to Toronto in March 2004 with a new inspiration of the fascinating fantasy of vacationers and resort life.
Upon his return, James began teaching Digital Photography and Adobe Photoshop for DCDSB taking him back to the necessities and basics of the craft he had spent so much time tweaking. A different perspective becomes a new approach to current works; painting suddenly became a subject of study, as well as a new investment in power tools.
James’ work is an ongoing study of photographs that depict a moment in time. He embraces the suggestion that the sentimental affiliations experienced by a kindred witness are indeed a collection of associations that can be conveyed to a foreign audience. Using bright acrylics, wax, aluminum, rivets, wallpaper, power tools, and nostalgic photographs James explores this intangible gap.
