Box Construct

Bonnie Miller
The power line series has occupied my full attention for the last three years. I am influenced by the cinematic idea of an ‘image system’, and explore in these works the multiple meanings that power lines and structures present to the viewer. I am interested in how these meanings may alter with changes in composition, scale and surface.

Recently, I have taken my interest with construction more literally, and have been layering and building images physically, emphasizing surface and form, along with colour and composition.  I have also been reducing the elements of the power lines to more simplified and interpreted forms, moving away from direct depiction of the object.

For me, these images evoke ideas about global and individual politics, economy and interdependence. I am interested in the physical objects that support our power grid, and what I think of as the subculture of workers who maintain this grid. The relationship that I have to power; my location socially in relation to power both metaphorically and literally- these are the ideas that keep me engaged with this image and its variations.
